Through My Window

“Through My Window” is the name of a photography series on the Apartment Therapy blog. These are a couple of shots through my window recently. I may submit one of the pastel sky shots.
When I first looked at the apartment, David Todd commented that the view was good because it was unobstructed by other buildings. I remember his comment, but it didn’t really register until I moved in and lived here for a while. Now I understand. I got it David!
I lived with two interesting views in San Diego. I could see sunsets over the ocean in Carlsbad but it didn’t take long for them to become boring. Nothing ever happened other than a sail boat once in a while. Some will remember the little cottage on West Walnut with its neat view of San Diego Harbor and the aircraft carriers berthed across the way on Coronado. It was much more interesting because of harbor activity. I’ll always remember the flight of la paloma coming up the canyon in the mornings.
Unexpectedly, I believe this is the best view ever. I certainly wasn’t looking for a “view apartment” in the places I could afford to live in Brooklyn. Not every day, but many days the view is like a painters canvas. This gets my vote for the best morning sky since moving in. In the expanded view you can see some birds in the sky and the contrail of a jet flying over JFK which is only about 15 miles as the crow flies.

Times passes. Same window. What the hell is that white stuff? “It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas”. Incidentally I’ve discovered that my 100% Finnish DNA is standing me in good stead. The cold may be bothering my knees, but not me. I’ve stood waiting for a bus in cold windy weather without flinching. It may not be fun, but it’s no big deal. It’s not weather I live, it’s whether I live.

Glad you’re holding up in the cold weather. It’s 63 degrees where we live and I’m bundled up.
Saw Brian Boitano skating on the Today Show this morning. Are you gonna get some ice skates and head down to Rockefeller Center this holiday season?
Love the views. Gorgeous!

Ditto what Heather said about bundling up ’cause it’s the low 60′s here…guess we’re whimps on the left coast! But I still refuse to wear socks – it has to go down to the 40′s!

I had ice skates at a very early age. I still remember that my ankles caved in. I found out later that it was probably because of the over sized second hand skates I had. Later I had both racing and hockey skates. We used to skate on the Hempstead Lake State Park sailboat pond. We just always called it the filtabeds without thinking of why. You perfect diction Californians would most likely say filter beds.
Like all little Finnish kids, I also had skis but there was not much snow and I never really learned how to use them.
As much as I’d like to, my ice skating days may be over. This is an excerpt from a medical website on the subject of knee replacement. We’ll see. BTW, Joe Torre just had a knee replacement this past week.
Can you say this 10 times fast…”Need new knees, now! Need new knees, now!, Need new knees, now!…”
Recommended Activities
Cycling is an excellent aerobic workout. Calisthenics, swimming, low-resistance rowing, stationary skiing machines, walking, hiking, and low-resistance weight lifting all are excellent ways to maintain fitness without overstressing the implant.
Suitable activities include bowling, croquet, golf, doubles tennis, table tennis, ballroom dancing and square dancing.
Other activities that are suitable but slightly more risky include downhill skiing, scuba diving, in-line skating, ice skating, softball, volleyball, speed walking, horseback riding, hunting and low-impact aerobics.

I could have skated all day Friday right here in Brooklyn at the Wollman Rink, Prospect Park for a $6 skate rental fee.

Hey! That’s a bargain – warm those knees up and get out there with the holiday revelers! Skating, hot chocolate with marshmallows – what could be better!?!

I’ll think about it but MAS walking tours probably rank higher on my “knees risk/reward scale.” I’ll definitely go on the Rockefeller Center tour on Christmas day. If I do some ice skating, I’ll probably go to the The Pond at Bryant Park. They’ve done a beautiful restoration job on the park which is just behind the main New York Public Library. I watched the skating one evening after a book signing lecture about old Penn Station. Check out these photos of skating at the park.

Has the weather been nice enough for you to take advantage of a walking tour?…Looks like a great way to enjoy the city! Just kidding about the ‘skating challenge’ – take care of those knees – but do join the ‘revelers’. Take some pictures!

There were a couple of walking tours of interest this past weekend. One was waterfront Williamsburg. Weather said “no way”. It’s one thing to walk in cold weather with a purpose, another to amble along in a walking tour with stops for lectures. I had a meetng at EFMS today that required walking on both ends of the trip. It was biting cold! It would be no problem except for my aching knees. One thing I was doing in S.D. that I’m not doing now is a daily 45 minute LifeCycle ride. Exercise is recommended for osteoarthritis. I’m going to get back on the cycle with my new Silver Sneakers free health club membership. We’ll see if it helps. Couldn’t hurt.
